Driving down from Kentucky, I was really beginning to question my own sanity. Not at the choice of show to attend…the Southeastern ALL Chevy/GMC Truck Nationals sounds like an excellent way to spend a couple of hours…but because for the fourth time, my phone went into Emergency Broadcast Alert mode over the outright deluge of water falling from the sky, and the Chrysler had hydroplaned more times than I cared to ever experience. Held at Moss-Wright Park in Goodlettsville, Tennessee (just north of Nashville), the event promised to draw out every kind of GM truck that was produced. I didn’t doubt the expectations…I doubted the reality. Who was going to park their show truck on the grass in the middle of an absolute drencher of a storm?

After parking Angry Grandpa in a field that was promising to become a Chrysler trap, I sprinted over to the American Powertrain trailer to get my gear out of the downpour. As I waited out the storm with Matt Graves, Jeff Lee, and grilled cheese sandwiches from one of Nashville’s food trucks, you couldn’t help but notice that there were a lot of trucks on the grass. Easily more than the maybe ten I expected to see stick it out, and they weren’t all lifted rigs on mud tires, either. Once the rain quit and I started roaming around, the variety started to appear: lifted box Chevrolets against a high-concours restored big-block GMC Sierra Grande. El Caminos were present, and so was one of the 28 Aspen Blue GMC Typhoon super-SUVs. Muscle trucks, sport trucks, custom dallies, work trucks, and more had stuck out the monsoon. That’s too cool for words. That they stuck out the 95-degree temperature backed with 100% humidity afterwards is…well, questionable, but you have to admire the hardiness of the people who brought their GM trucks out to show off.
