The “WTF?” Files: Who Makes A Trar Out Of A 1986 Chevy Cavalier Convertible?!

The “WTF?” Files: Who Makes A Trar Out Of A 1986 Chevy Cavalier Convertible?!

I can’t even begin to hide my hatred for a Chevy Cavalier of this generation. As a young kid, we had one as the family car, a miserable turd of a white 1985 wagon with blue interior that I spent years learning to loathe. The exhaust sounded like raw flatulence, the acceleration made me miss the four-banger Mustang II that my father traded in for the Cavalier, and for some reason, it’s suspension motions made me absolutely carsick wherever we went. No other vehicle has made me as ill as that little shitbox…I lost track of how many times I puked while sitting in the backseat of that car.

But here’s the weird thing about the Cavalier: in some very distinct, very specific aspects, I can dig them. When a friend of mine bought a four-speed two-door example to replace a Chrysler he crunched up in wintry weather, I found myself driving it more than he did. When I see one of the hatchback versions of the J-car, I kind of dig it, though it doesn’t hurt that every now and then I’ve seen a Pro Stock-style version that gives me all sorts of bad ideas. But this droptop 1986…this is beyond even my understanding. Someone found a nice convertible Cavalier, one that hadn’t been absolutely ragged the hell out, and plonked it on the frame of a 1987 Toyota four-wheel-drive pickup. Toyota engine, Toyota suspension, all of it, just dressed with a droptop body instead of the pickup truck.

Fun fact: between 1996 and 2000, Chevrolet exported the J-body to Japan as the Toyota Cavalier. Meanwhile, some enterprising soul in Tennessee had the synergy down ten times better than two giant auto manufacturers could have dreamed of.

I’ve seen a lot worse trars that are way out of proportion than this one – as far as the shitbox Cavalier, yes I suppose, a good sturdy car for its time – my son had new ’86 square top 2 dr coupe with a 2.0 litre 4cyl & the 4 speed trans. He drove it several years and so many ‘intentional’ off-roading expeditions the floorboards were smashed upwards & still ran great! 136k miles & the only parts replaced were 2 cv boots & a clutch cable. I think this is a very cool marriage of a rotted ‘yota & an undesireable shitbox

Well as long as your WTF files go.Why does John Force spend millions each year to go fast for 1000′.Why do people spend $250.00K on a street rod. Why do I have a big shop ,I pay taxes and payments on.Full of stuff just to do What ever I frigg’n want to. The entire auto hobby is mostly funded by “because I wanted to” .I think we can all comment all we want to. But being a judge about others choice of what and why. Look out you may be judged along those lines someday. We all go to car shows .As we walk and look .We will give the owner a thumbs up,or even tell them how cool it is. Or maybe just shake your head and walk on by. Looks like the little Cav. was done pretty well. And those cars can’t even be used as parts for something else. So my hat is off to whom ever used it for something totally useless and just what they wanted to do with it. I have been know to do things along this line. Its no Mopar ,but its cool.
