The Cleaned-Up Blue Collar Worker: This 1986 Ford F-350 Wrecker Is Day One Fresh!

I cannot wait for Lohnes to see this gem of a find. I can’t. We all know how Brian loves his trucks: big, stripped down, work-ready and utilitarian. That’s why he owns Brutus the wrecker, a 1968 Chevrolet C-50 wrecker. He loves that great big lump, no doubt, but he also has the same automotive ADD form that we all do. So, because I’m the human equivalent of the devil on the shoulder, I feel that he should see this Ford F-350 up-front and personally.

First, this thing is clean. According to the seller, it’s been in a museum for twenty-five years and only has just under 8,000 miles. What?! Twenty-five years ago was 1992…most tow trucks from the mid-1980s looked like hell two to three years into their service. It just doesn’t explain how this Ford looks showroom-stock, straight from being fitted with it’s Century tow boom system. All of it looks dead-stock: radio block-off plate, the PTO and switch panel, all of it looks as-delivered, day one.

The 460 and four-speed will combine to provide barely any fuel mileage, but when you’re driving a tow truck like this, it’s not about fuel economy, it’s about having the cleanest classic tow truck available.

Price isn’t outrageous (right now) with an aftermarket EFI swap and a GearVendors it might get 10 mpg. Downhill , with a tailwind , unloaded. I want a ramp truck but imagine what a hero you’d be at the local track night when someone’s driver/racer needed a ride home !
