This 1977 Pontiac LeMans Was Supposed To Be A Figure 8 Car, But Was Spared – How Would You Finish It?

This 1977 Pontiac LeMans Was Supposed To Be A Figure 8 Car, But Was Spared – How Would You Finish It?

When I see things listings that say, “Figure-8” car, I automatically figure that within months, the car will be a dead carcass on a rollback headed to the crusher. Amateur racing is brutal on cars, period, and what was a modestly decent shell will look like a soda can that was kicked around all afternoon after a few races. Sure, it ended life as a racecar, but it wasn’t a glamorous end. You can only save so many vehicles from that fate, but while surfing Craigslist I found one gem that might have a second shot at life. This 1977 Pontiac LeMans was destined to go racing, but the seller decided that prepping a race car was more than he wanted to deal with. Some of the interior is gone, and the car is in “hide everything” black from head to toe, but there’s nothing really wrong with it. The 350/automatic is present, it runs and drives, and it even has paperwork.

Why would you bother with a project like this? Because it’s already gone enough that no matter what you do, so long as you don’t set it on fire or drive it into a brick wall, things can only go right from here. Get some aftermarket gauges and build a panel. Put in that rollcage. Get some D-slot mags and some all-terrain tires or wide street rubber. Make this thing bark. It’s a 1973 LeMans…they aren’t that collectible, they aren’t that valuable, but they aren’t that common either. Give that car a reason for living! Eight hundred bucks is the buy-in for the car itself…how much money were you prepared to dump into a project car? We see a NASCAR tribute machine in the works right here…what about you?

I have never figured out why we need perfect cars to start with, when we actually ends up throwing all parts away..so this Le Mans could end up like a race car,i guess..Nascar idea is good, but it could also be built like a Le Mans road racer. After all, there where a Torino and a Charger attended in the 76 event, and this one have the name to give GMs the “could have been”.

Just refit the missing parts of the interior and leave the rest as it is – apart from putting in a big block 445 motor!

Street legal stock car for sure! Drop a detuned 355ci NASCAR spec SBC in it, add a cage and some period style graphics, and let ‘er rip!

    I owned one of these.
The only thing this one needs is exactly what I did with mine.
Just put it between (2) 5 ton flat pieces of steel and press together.

So is it a 73 or 77 or do you really know Bangshift? Somebody needs to proofread the copy before they publish it. It’s a 77
