Rough Start: Get Over Your Anti-Sedan Stance And Pick Up This 1981 Pontiac LeMans!

Rough Start: Get Over Your Anti-Sedan Stance And Pick Up This 1981 Pontiac LeMans!

I want to point something out to those who openly bash anything with more than two doors on it: the Chevrolet Impala SS, the big LT-1 powered B-body variety, is twenty-two years old at the newest. What other two doors were there to want? Dodge Viper, Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro, Pontiac Firebird. Since then, you can add the Pontiac GTO and…well, realistically priced rear-wheel-drive machines kind of end there if you want to stay American. 1980s junk is in their thirties, 1970s barges in their forties, and muscle-era rides are pushing fifty years old. There are only so many coupe bodies that still exist in the world, and many of them are starting to pick up value quickly…it’s the “chrome bumper” syndrome: if it’s old enough to have had chromed bumpers, it’s old enough to be a collectible.

You can still get into a two-door if you know how to shop right and look away from the “right” picks or aren’t scared of questionable work over the years and potential hackery. Or you can spare yourself half of the drama and go straight to a four-door sedan that shares it’s bones with a two-door that has a following. Which is exactly what we’d be screaming at you to do for this 1981 Pontiac LeMans. Here’s the basic rub: it’s a G-body, which means you have build options. It’s a beauty of a G-body sedan…compare it to a Cutlass four-door or a Malibu, or even the follow-up to the LeMans, the Bonneville sedan, and you’ll see that it’s easily the best-looking of the bunch…the one-year-only LeMans face helps. This one is as clean as they get…even the engine bay, which is normally a dark pit of despair on a 1980s GM, is bright. We don’t know if that’s the 301ci V8 or the 4.3L V8, but we bet it runs strong enough to leave alone while you start preparing for an engine build. Or not…in fact, maybe it’s better if you leave this one alone power wise and focus on handling and brakes. Hide some good hardware behind the old-school repop wheels. Enjoy the comfy interior, the light weight compared to a modern sedan, and think of the money you saved over having to clean, repair, and re-wire a similar vintage Monte Carlo that’s been around the block a dozen times. Your $3,900 would be well spent.

I would make a copy if the Malibu that Hot Rod Garage just did. It looks good with the ralley one rims on the car.

The biggest problem with these 78-83 G body sedans and wagons is that you can’t roll down the rear windows!

Why GM decided to give every buyer the experience you get in the back of a police is beyond me.

    Cheap cheap.

I’m amazed at how good those Rally I’s look against that body style! If I wasn’t drowning in project cars, I would give this one serious consideration. With a little suspension attention, maybe a brake upgrade, and then a new drivetrain down the road, you could have an awesome, fun to drive car, for not much money. I wouldn’t hesitate for a second to buy a four door now. Hugely practical and generally much cheaper buy-in. Cool car. Hope it finds a good home.

I have had a very cool 4 door years ago .However I don’t know if the down under love for 4 doors will ever catch on here. And by the way a very bad ass 4 door is a very sought after car here and now . Hell Cat Charger .But money can make a person do compromises .

Yeah, it’s sweet for what it is. A stock way under-powered car. I’d have to lift the nose piece & swap all the Pontiac related pieces onto a 2 door Malibu body. There was a ready to V8 swap, 2 door LeMans on craigslist for $800. It was a red/red bucket seat car too!

Seems like a few of the commenters are missing the entire point of the article. I for one would rock that every day. The best part is you will not see another one, let alone twenty in the case of a Mustang or Camaro, at local shows and meets.

Roof is too short for the number of Doors!
More Doors are parts cars !
if this was the 2 door version I would be after it like a fat kid after a Twinkie
