The Ultimate Rig For Easter Jeep Safari: An Aussie-Market Jeep CJ-10!

The Ultimate Rig For Easter Jeep Safari: An Aussie-Market Jeep CJ-10!

The more I deal with Jeep owners, the stranger I tend to find them. They’re as fiercely independent as most of the manufacturers that have owned the name at some point in the history of the original workhorse four-by-four, as meticulous over the details as a Mopar restoration shop around 1994, and with so few models to choose from, individuality is everything. Is that a Forward Control? Is that a Tuxedo? Holy crap, that’s a RHD CJ-8…how many of those are left anywhere? It’s like any other game, one-upmanship is the key to success. Have something nobody else has and you are good to go.

So…with that in mind, let’s take a look at this oddball and try to make light of it. What your eyes are seeing is a 1984 Jeep CJ-10. The cab and basic forward body shape is Jeep CJ courtesy of American Motors. The front end? Yeah, that’s…nice, dear. The bed is pure Aussie one-tonner style, minimal, with drop sides and tie-down points. What you are really seeing, however, is the most well-disguised J-10 pickup in existence. The frame and running gear are all FSJ. And outside of that face, which is going to take a lot of getting used to, we really dig it. When new, this had either the 2.5L Iron Duke four-banger, the 258ci AMC six, or a Nissan-sourced 3.2L diesel unit. Happily, under that strapped hood is an AMC 360 V8. Nice.

Look at it this way: the new Gladiator is that kid fresh out of high school who can work, but is preoccupied with having fun. This is a weathered ranch hand who will work all day long, but don’t expect any wins in the looks department. Nothing against pretty looks, but the idea of a Jeep built to do grunt work just seems full-circle here. Now, how are you going to ship it to the States?
