Brian put up the Kenny Bernstein Ford Tempo Funny Car body that he found on Ebay last night, and it doesn’t come close to being as cool as this 1997 Ron Capps “Rookie of the Year” Copenhagen Funny Car Body. First off, you can have it for 1/10th the price of the Bernstein body. Second, it is a Camaro rather than some stupid Ford Tempo like the one my grandparents pulled around behind their motorhome. And on top of those two things, this car still shapes Capps racing career today. Stuff you may not realize, but we are going to share with you.

The first, and most basic thing that many people may not realize is the significance of the number 28 on the side of this car. Capps used the 28 as a tribute to Chevrolet since they were running a Z-28 Camaro at Don “The Snake” Prudhomme Racing back then. Despite finishing in the top 10 on many occasions since, Capps runns the number 28 to this day even though he can use his top 10 number for the following season according to NHRA rules. He’s said on multiple occasions that this is the number that got him here, and until he’s got that #1 he’ll roll with the 28. We dig that.

As a rookie, Capps drove this car to multiple NHRA National Event wins, #1 Qualifiers, and ran this car to the first Funny Car pass over 315 mph.
