Drag Gallery: Big Buck Bracket Action from Historic Great Lakes Dragaway

(Photos by Greg Rourke) – We’re still tearing through the massive mountains of photos sent to us by our worldwide army of contributors this morning! Now we electronically jet to Wisconsin’s own Great Lakes Dragaway which is one of the longest operating drag strips in the country and certainly one of the most famous. Greg Rourke was there on Sunday with his camera to capture lots of cool action from the track’s big buck bracket race where winners walked with checks for thousands of bucks!

If you have never hit the strip and bracket raced before, it is a great way to get acclimated with the sport of drag racing. You don’t need a super fast hot rod (but it is more fun the faster you go!) and as you will see in this gallery, creativity and original thought are highly encouraged when choosing a ride! The flamed Mustang II is a perfect example of a bracket car that we would build for ourselves. Wicked to the tenth power!

Thanks to Greg for the photos and expect a lot more stuff from Great Lakes Dragaway this season as they have granted Greg season long photo access! Big thanks to the track for that and we look forward to seeing cool stuff all reason long.

  1. Pasko's R.P.M.

Jon was looking up an article here on BangShift, when he spotted his ’76 Mustang Cobra II at GLD from 4-29-12! This was our first weekend at GLD, but it won’t be the last! The 545BBF was built here in our engine machine shop Pasko’s Racing, Performance & Machine in Cumberland WI. The pearled, flamed paint is by Mike Rose of Color Creations in Richfield. Even with the rain, cold and only running the 1/8th we had a blast and look forward to our next trip to GLD!!! Thanks for the recognition!
