Drag Week 2012 – What You Need to Know About Today’s Track – Tulsa Raceway Park

Today is the first official day of Hot Rod Magazine Drag Week 2012 presented by Gear Vendors. We’re at Tulsa Raceway Park in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Since you’re there and we’re here, we thought it would be a cool idea to give you a specific vital update of what’s on the docket for each day, some information about the track we’re at, and a general update as to how the event is progressing. Who is in, who is out, and who is doing more than we thought they ever would.

Here’s what you need to know about today’s track at 2012 Hot Rod Magazine Drag Week presented by Gear Vendors –

Today’s venue –

Tulsa Raceway Park

Built – 1964

Opened  – 1965 as Southwest Raceway

Renamed – 1969 named Tulsa International Raceway

Renamed again – Year unknown to Tulsa Raceway Park

Track has been AHRA, IHRA, and NHRA sanctioned

Physical Elevation – 619′ above sea level

Track Surface – 675′ of concrete and then a transition to asphalt

Notable history – Track hosted 1972 and 1973 PRA National Challenge races run by Jim Tice and Don Garlits to protest NHRA purse structure. Races were run on same weekend as US Nationals.

Track had a famous, multistory round tower before it was razed for make way for modern tower with luxury suites, etc.

This track is capable of holding onto 6-second Unlimited class runs all day long. It has a long shutdown and has hosted national events where Top Fuel cars have run 325mph down the strip. Surface is very good, flat, and smooth.

The quickest and fastest run in Hot Rod Magazine Drag Week history was made by Larry Larson at Hebron, Ohio in 2010. The run was a 6.956/209mph run. (BS predicts that the number will be replaced during today’s competition.)
