Fresh Motor, Lift, And Plenty Of Room Inside…Who Knew A Chevy Short Bus Could Be So Handy?

Fresh Motor, Lift, And Plenty Of Room Inside…Who Knew A Chevy Short Bus Could Be So Handy?

I’ve been laughing for five minutes now, trying to figure out how I’m going to write up this eBay find. It’s a good one, I promise, but I’m fighting off every last A-hole urge I have to make every short bus joke under the sun. This isn’t me trying to be funny, it’s blunt-force honesty here…I like what this 2002 Chevrolet Express Blue Bird-converted bus can offer to a gearhead who needs a utility vehicle. It’s got plenty of interior space…you could stick at least four engines on stands behind the driver if you can rig up a system to lock the blocks in place. You can even lift them into the bus via the wheelchair lift on the side. The powertrain is dirt-simple GM V8 and automatic trans, and there’s parts vans by the mile for the Express, which has been in production more or less in the same shape since 1995. And if you want, you could even rig up some seats to bring a few friends with you. Think of it as the ultimate junkyard trip vehicle: you and a few friends, all the tools you’d ever need, more than enough room for what you’d bring out short of a whole vehicle, and all of that cargo space covered.

Or you could go nuts, spray the 5.7L and have a ball at a dragstrip night. You wouldn’t set records, but you’d have everybody present on their asses laughing, enjoying the show. Or you could have a race-support vehicle that could sleep a few people. Whatever you’d want to do with it. And the seller’s brief line in the listing, “Am willing to drive it to you and fly back for free”, should be icing on the cake. They will bring the bus to your house…all you have to do is click the button and win the auction! (Or pay the asking price, either way…)

There you have it. One useful vehicle, one writeup that won’t get me fired for making a short bus joke. Done and done.

if you want a bus od not buy one off ebay buy one directly from a school district and save bucks … school districts seel them for about 2 grand

Tying the engines down is easy as the bus is already equipped with tie down anchors for the wheel chairs

Heavy duty drive train ,well maintained .And yes look into buying them from a school auction,Cheep cheep .Does any one want to buy a 40 foot bluebird with a cummins 5.9 Air brakes ,air ride ,air conditioned? and its already half converted to a car pulling RV. One thing you have to do. Is be able to prove you have converted it into something other than a “bus” . Check into the insurance, you’ll understand. A lot of roundy rounders use buses. And so did Art Arfons. He used a bus to tote around his jet cars

How much of that insurance issue depends on the state? The Federal DOT is going to mess with you regardlwas of what the states do, and some states are bad.

My son and I have been using a 1998 1 Ton Chevy Short Bus with a 6.5 Turbo Diesel with 250,000 miles on it for a couple of years now. We have it built as a redneck motor home for the track and it tows 10,000 lbs of trailer, tools and race car 70 mph down the interstate. We have about $3,500 invested in it and it\’s as reliable as the day is long. Everyone who sees it at the track ask more questions about it than they do our 1965 El Camino drag car.
