Gateway International Raceway is Latest Drag Strip to Rise From the Ashes; On NHRA 2012 Schedule

Gateway International Raceway is Latest Drag Strip to Rise From the Ashes; On NHRA 2012 Schedule

Dead drag strips seem to be crawling out of their graves like zombies this summer and that’s a-OK with us! Gateway International Raceway, just outside of St. Louis, Missouri has been lifeless since November of 2010. With the help of a local real estate developer, an NHRA national event is on the docket for 2012 and a one year lease of the track has been signed and agreed upon by the multiple people who own the land the facility sits on.

The man behind the deal is Curtis Francois, a guy with lots of racing history in the road course and open wheel realm. The one year lease he secured on the property will allow the national event to be held as well as whatever other racing action they want to plan at the track. More interesting is the fact that Francois wants to buy the facility and claims to be in active negotiations to do just that.

The major hangup on getting a sale done at Gateway is the fact that the land the track is a bunch of seperate parcels owned by different parties. No on has been able to get all of those people on board with a sale deal to this point, but Francois, knowing the market, the area, and being a successful business person himself may be able to get it done.

Hit the link below to read the whole story. With Memphis back and Gateway apparently on the way back, it seems that despite the economy and negative financial news floating around every day, drag strips are still viable business enterprises when operated correctly!

Anything that could potentially keep the racing off the street and on the track where it belongs is a positive in my book.

So happy the strip is going to re-open. I took my kids all the time right up until it closed. I haven’t even been able to break the bad news to them, they would be crushed. As soon as it’s open again, we’ll be there!!!
