Just Keep Adding Them Up: Over A Million Rams Recalled For Airbag Woes…Don’t Slam Your Doors Too Hard Now!

It was bad enough yesterday when we reported that FCA was having to offer a buyback program for over half a million Dodge and Ram trucks and SUVs, but today’s announcement that over 1.06 million Ram trucks will have to be recalled due to airbag issues, which are not related to anything Takata, is just icing on the “I’m pretty sure that ain’t chocolate” cake. As reported by Car and Driver, two separate recalls are the cause.

The first affects 2013-15 Rams 1500, 2500 and 3500’s side curtain airbag. FCA initiated a voluntary recall after learning that the airbag deployment module has a low deployment threshold. If the door is slammed with excessive force, the bags go off. FCA claims that the incidents happened in four-door trucks and in less than 0.005% of the total vehicles, but they aren’t taking any chances, especially after the NHTSA decided to go after FCA with renewed energy. They claim that the module manufacturer, Bosch, didn’t get the proper specifications for the four-door trucks.

The second recall affects 2012-2015 Rams of all classes, from 1500 to 5500 that are equipped with the EVIC display system and is due to an electrical short that can occur due to the wiring harness rubbing against a retainer spring in the airbag module, which can inadvertently set off the driver’s side air bag. FCA knows of 55 deployments and has bought back two pickups so far. Dealers will put caps on the springs and tie down the wiring harnesses to ensure that they don’t make contact.

    @ kid

    Do you have any friends?

Seriously, you sound like a self-loathing forever-alone virgin.

The stuff from yesterday was bad, but this recall just sounds like some basic housekeeping. Both of these issues strike me as things that probably weren’t apparent in initial testing.

My brother’s Ram truck that Dodge doesn’t buy back will be worth more in the junkyard. He’s f-kd and got 2 more yrs to pay it off

    Thanks Sergio

  4. RAMMED? TOUGH!

Still working a little K-Car magic into everything they do.

Take a FIAT and convert it into a ute.

First it was the weakling FUBAR transmission in the Cummins Diesel RAM.
    Now,all these other things.

The RAM symbol looks like a uterus.
    Yeah ,it a hysterectomy.
