Best of 2020: New C8 Corvettes Busted Street Racing In Bowling Green

Best of 2020: New C8 Corvettes Busted Street Racing In Bowling Green

(Editor’s note: One word, folks. OOPS. -ed.) The stories from back in the day are legend. On streets like Woodward Avenue and Telegraph Road in Detroit, teams of engineers from the manufacturers would go out late at night with something a little bit special snuck out of the back door for some (ahem) “verification tests”. Were they officially sanctioned? Maybe. Maybe not. Were they building up buzz for a new model or were they doing their best to keep the other guys on their toes? Whatever the case may be, the idea of a bunch of guys rolling a ringer up to the lights and laying waste to Johnny HotFoot on the street sounds like an amazing time to be alive.

Now, how well does that work in the world today? Not so well, it seems. On Wednesday, January 8th, 2020, Kentucky State Police nabbed two workers tied to General Motors out having a bit of a contest of speed out on Lovers Lane in Bowling Green, Kentucky. That particular stretch of road historically has been empty, but construction in recent years and it’s close proximity to Scottsville Road (a business highway through town and a connection point to Interstate 65) means that it wasn’t the wisest choice for a friendly wager. In a statement provided to Automobile, General Motors noted: “We are aware of an incident involving our test vehicles and are currently investigating. Safety remains our overriding priority at General Motors.” Have no fear that GM is certainly investigating…somebody had to go collect the two Corvettes, since they were towed away from the scene.

Occasionally, we’d like to think that this all may have been orchestrated as a publicity stunt. But for once, that doesn’t seem to be the case. Bowling Green is a pretty friendly car town, but the cops can and will do something if they feel the need is justified…ask anyone who was a part of last year’s LS Fest sideshow romp in the hotel parking lot.

Sad part is, they were racing each other. No Hellcat or Mustang to be found! At least then you might get to keep your job.

Guys…publicity stunt! Do test mules and engineers still need to be out in a car at all hours of the day…as they already have some on or getting ready to go on the assembly line?
