Of the many reasons that LS engines have invaded every corner of the hot rodding world, one of the biggest is that they are pretty easy to work on. No exotic tools are needed for jobs, the engine retains a familiar small block feel that makes it approachable to regular wrenchers and there’s a ton of horsepower that can be made just by doing the typical hot rodder stuff like swapping a cam. Heck, even that job is easier on an LS because of the lifter retainers that allow a camshaft to be swapped with the intake still on! There is one hold over from the old small block days with regard to the cam swap though and that is the fact that with a traditional timing cover, you have to drop the oil pan down to get the cover off and that’s an extra step Hamburger’s decided to help you eliminate with their new two piece, CNC machined timing cover.

When you install this piece, you’ll no longer have to drop the pan at all because the bottom of the cover does not need to be unbolted. The top piece detaches separately and allows you to slide the cam out simply and easily. The covers are machined from a billet of aluminum, they have two part numbers available for you depending on where your cam sensor is located (front or rear) and the covers are compatible with engines equipped with displacement on demand and variable valve timing.

(April, 2014) – The GM LS family of engines has quickly become the hottest powerplant in the aftermarket thanks to its light weight, plentiful numbers, and near-infinite power potential.  Drag racers, hot rodders and tuners alike all know that aftermarket camshafts and valvetrain adjustments are the keys to extracting every last bit of power from the LS engine family. The two-piece design of Hamburger’s new billet timing cover for Gen IV LS engines allows the upper portion of the cover to be removed for cam changes or tuning, while the lower half stays bolted to the front of the block preserving the main seal. You’ll never need to drop the oil pan to access the cam and the unit incorporates an o-ring seal into the bottom half of the cover that mates with the smoothly machined flange on the upper section to offer a leak-free seal.
