DIY Tech: Build Your Own Steering Wheel, Or Just Watch Superfast Matt Do It. Whichever.

I’ve seen a few steering wheels made in my time, and they always take a ton of work and some serious wood and metalworking skills. But the truth is, it’s 2021 and there are a bunch of great companies that can help with some of the heavy lifting. In this video from Superfast Matt, he makes a wood-rimmed aluminum wheel for one of his projects just to see if he could do it and how nice it would actually turn out. The truth is, it turns out pretty well actually, and looks like a project that anyone with a little bit of skill could pull off with the help of a metal cutter. In this case SendCutSend.com is the the metal cutting service of choice, a place that can cut a variety of materials with whatever pattern you send them. It’s a cool service, considerably cheaper than you’d think, and makes otherwise unattainable projects possible in your home garage. We dig it, and you will too.

But back to the steering wheel. After getting the aluminum cut for the center, along with some MDF jigs, it was a matter of cutting, gluing, routing, and sanding the wood in order to get it all mounted up right and put together so it would last. I’m not a big wood wheel fan, but this is pretty cool. Plus, I looked at it and thought about some other ways to make the rim that might be fun. We’ll see.
