TIG Welding Stainless To Aluminum? Wait What? How To Bond The Two Like You’ve Never Seen Before

TIG Welding Stainless To Aluminum? Wait What? How To Bond The Two Like You’ve Never Seen Before

When it comes to tig welding, you pretty much can’t argue with 6061.com because the dude is a master and laying down strong and sexy tig welds. The projects are always fun, the techniques cool, and the end results are always something you wish you had. But when he posts up a video about welding Stainless to Aluminum, I’m thinking he hit the sauce a bit hard and a bit early on that particular day of shooting. But it turns out he didn’t. You’ll think he did, for a lot of the video, but he didn’t. I figured out what he was actually doing pretty early, but I’ve been welding a long time. I bet some of you will get it and some won’t, but watch anyway because he shows exactly what he’s doing and why as it gets toward the end.

There is no doubt, that this method will attach stainless to aluminum in a really strong connection that could be of use for all kinds of things.

Not the technique, note the amount of filler rod, and pay attention as he shows the inside of what he’s created and it will make a lot of sense. Hopefully it inspires you and makes you want to get out in the garage this week and build something!

Unless the bolt is made from 321 or 347 stainless the amount of heat put into it will sensitize the metal and allow it corrode very fast. 321 and 347 are used in aircraft exhaust. All other grades will sensitize above 800F.
