There’s A New American Inline Six Engine Coming And It’s Not Exactly Who You’d Expect It From

(By Tom Lohnes)-  The new Jeep Grand Cherokee L is just hitting dealers now, and is agreed to be a pretty solid SUV. Jeep, however, doesn’t exactly think it’s perfect. Apparently, the all-new standard wheelbase Grand Cherokee will be the first vehicle to carry FCA’s new Inline-6.

According to a claim from SEMA of all places, the next-gen Grand Cherokee will debut the new “Tornado” Inline-6. FCA, more specifically Jeep, has been working on this engine for quite some time, so hopefully it does come out soon.

We don’t exactly know full details on this engine, but we do know some sort of forced induction and electric motors are involved. I think it may be a similar setup to the “everything-charged” Land Rover Defenders’ I6, using a single twin-scroll turbocharger and then an electric supercharger to compensate for turbo lag.

Of course, this is a rumor, so we really don’t know. If this is true, I would love to see the tuning potential this engine has. The last I6 Jeep made, the 4.0, was a huge success, so how about they do it again?
