Action Video of a 1950s Tractor Dragging With Ford 390 Power

With all the nostalgia drag racing and car show stuff that has been
hitting the blog lately, we didn’t want our readers to think that we’ve
lost our affection for tractors. If there is one thing we love more
than tractors, it’s hot rod tractors with gasoline burning muscle car
engines in them. Enter this early 1950s Massey Harris with a Ford 390
engine. Firstly, it sounds totally awesome as the weight of the sled
bears down upon it and the engine really has to start working.
Secondly, when the Massey starts to climb the ring gear and the front
end of the machine is a couple feet in the air it just looks cool, and
thirdly, while the low rpm grunt of a diesel is impressive and all,
nothing beats the sounds of a gas engine working it’s ass off!

A friend once summed up tractor pulling in an
interesting light for us. They said, “It’s like one really long and
intense dyno pull.” Due to the linear motion of the weight and how it
slowly starts working the motor harder and harder, we think the
summation was right. Where a diesel would have lugged down and
continued to pull (or dig trenches) at the end of the run, the gasser
just runs out of gumption, after slaying the rest of the competitors by
making a near full pull.
Here’s the video:
