We’ve said for years that we’d love to go to Summernats in Australia and witness the insanity that rules our wintertime YouTube viewing first-hand. No doubt, it’s up our alley: dyno challenges, car shows, and about every creative way to send a pair of tires into nuclear overload are right there, ready and waiting for the viewer to enjoy. But here’s a serious question for both the Aussies and the Yanks: the Australians are damn proud of their burnout competitions, and will not mince words about our attempts. Even for events like Powercruise USA and the like that do allow for fully unhinged, open-pit, “Go until they blow!” kind of anarchy, we always get the asterisk mark. You know the one:

Lately, there’s been a trend of Americans trying to break into the Australian burnout scene, and honestly…we can’t say it’s been a success. Farmtruck and AZN got a local college to build a burnout contest-ready duplication of Sean’s sucker-making Chevrolet truck and the first time we saw it in action, it kissed the concrete a couple of times. So we hope that Cleetus knows what he’s actually doing here, because he’s going to tread onto hallowed ground and go up in front of some very unforgiving crowds. That’s right, Cleetus McFarland, the man who can turn a Corvette into Frankenstein’s monster easily, is building a burnout machine out of a 1992 Chevrolet Camaro Z28. We have to credit him, for a base to build on, he found a peach – 496ci big-boy under the hood, brakes, a 9-inch, and some choice suspension pieces from front to back. Someone was going for the gold when they built this car, and while there will be a lot of work to get the car ready before it gets thrown in a giant metal box and sent halfway around the world, there’s a lot that’s good. Honestly, if it wasn’t for the goal of Summernats, this Camaro would be good enough for most anything. But you’ve seen enough burnout videos to know that even as good as this car is, it won’t be enough.

Garrett, we wish you tons of luck. But you had better bring every last freaking ounce of your A-game. If you want to know what you’re going go be going up with against, think of a Roman coliseum. The odds are against you and the teeming masses of hyped-up fans won’t be won over easily.
