Classic YouTube: An Early Commercial For The Jeep Wagoneer!

Classic YouTube: An Early Commercial For The Jeep Wagoneer!

Take note, folks: It’s not a crossover, or a sport-utility vehicle, or a lifestyle vehicle, or an off-roader. It’s a station wagon. Yes, the 1962 Jeep Wagoneer was more truck than anything else. Yes, it had four-wheel-drive and no, it didn’t have a V8…not yet. That would come down the road in a couple of years courtesy of the AMC 327ci V8. But still…it was a station wagon. Fold down seats for expanded cargo room, durable construction that would hold up to just about anything (except, as history shows, just about anything…these suckers rusted!) and the go-anywhere, do-anything virtues of four-wheel-drive that didn’t require a Chinese Fire Drill to engage. The Wagoneer was radically ahead of it’s time and would evolve as it moved along the years, from brutally simple wagon to muscle off-roader to a wood-paneled luxo-rig that Iacocca probably dreamed about at night.

Like most other FSJ models, we tend to dig the earlier versions because we can appreciate what it was before it got gussied up with a sticker package or leather interior more befitting a Chrysler Fifth Avenue. Kaiser Jeep was still all-in on the plain, basic Jeep and had only just evolved what had been the Willys Jeep Station Wagon for the 1960s. It’s pretty cool to see the early commercial and watch as the high points of the Wagoneer are pointed out with little flair or drama. Just a good old rig, this is…and it’ll get you home once you’re done enjoying nature up close too!
