Dyno Day Down Under: Ever Wonder What The Street Cars Crank Out?

Dyno Day Down Under: Ever Wonder What The Street Cars Crank Out?

Australia’s laws and attitudes towards hot rodded automobiles are enough to make you look at California and realize that, no, it’s not that bad. At best, you’re someone with a loud and noisy hobby. At worse, you are a criminal, an absolute danger to society, who deserves to have their car crushed before their eyes before being made to walk everywhere for the rest of their life. From what we understand, some members of government wouldn’t be happy unless someone was walking behind the hoon yelling out, “Shame!” every few feet just for good measure.

We have heard differing takes on what is legal and what isn’t, and we aren’t versed in the rules in the individual states, but as a general rules, your life is easier if your car looks and acts like nothing is going on. Then again, those long black stripes all over the road that have officials actually mixing up tire-shredding anti-hoon pavement aren’t coming from stock Commodores, so what does the typical plated machine run for power? Check out this dyno day at Allsparks Auto and Performance for a sampling of the population!

hey Bryan, I think you’re getting a skewed view of Aussie car culture. Yes, authorities here hate hoons – but if you do the right thing, you pretty well get left alone. If you have an older car especially… mines a 73 Falcon coupe with a 351 and cops dig it – partially because of where it sits in relation to ADR’s (Australian Design Rules) Mine was built December 73 which predates ADR27A, the pollution equipment rule, by less than a month (1/01/74) which means pretty well any engine mod or swap is OK provided it doesn’t break other rules like excess noise or protrusion through the hood. The newer they get, the more they don’t like you to modify them…Oh, and you mention stock Commies not doing burnouts? Funny thing is, virtually all Commies are capable of dropping a decent burnout, as are most later Falcon 6’s….and that’s before we get to V8’s in either!

I’m not sure about the comments on the police being so tuff in Australia. I see a lot more modified cars actually being driven on the road in Australia than in the USA.

Judging by the results of that Mercedes C63 those dyno figure were showing kws at the rear wheels.

Bryan another interesting thing is the car fatality rate in Texas is double that total Australia. Similar populations. Texas is small and larger city traffic are very congested so maybe that has something to do with it or maybe the roadworthiness or cars has something to do with it.
