All things being equal, IROC racing seemed to be a coming together of the best: invite top-tier drivers, stick them in identical cars that were only different in color, cut them loose on a track, and wait to see who is the best. Sounds simple, but it wasn’t: regardless of the car used, effectively they were NASCAR builds made to look like the official vehicle (Porsche 911, Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Daytona, Dodge Avenger and Pontiac Trans Am) and the racers came from varied backgrounds, at first in a respectable ratio, but as the years progressed the number of NASCAR invitees increased and the number of “other race” drivers decreased. For what should have been a fair run with equal cars, there was plenty of incidents that kept the racing lively. Here is a collection of some of the more notable impacts from the world of IROC…from Al Unser’s intense impact in the 1975 race to Mark Martin’s wild ride in one of the closing races, there was no shortage of carnage. As Derek Bell said angrily after his crash at the 1984 Talladega IROC race, “…they’re like bloody animals out there.”
