Historical Footage: MotorWeek’s Comparison Between The 1969 Pontiac Trans Am And The 1999 Trans Am 30th Anniversary Edition

Nobody…not MotorWeek, not GM, not even the buying public, could have seen that this would be the last Anniversary Trans Am. Sure, in 1999 rumors had started to surface that GM’s F-car might be headed out of the door, but this was well before the economy tanked and GM wound up looking like the Monopoly Man with his pockets turned out and a sad face on. This was GM at both their best and worst: the LS1 had made it to the F-body twins and power was on the rise, and this is right about where things really started to sink. Plasticky interior? Overdone appearance package? Hell, the only thing missing on the Trans Am was Pontiac’s signature “ribbed for your pleasure” plastic body molding that adorned everything from the lowly Grand Am all the way through the most optioned-out minivan. But the 1999 Trans Am managed to escape most of that, and here we see it in a better light, in a comparison test against the one that started it all, a 400ci/4-speed 1969 Trans Am, in matching white and blue. It’s a MotorWeek test, so don’t expect tire-blazing testing, but it’s still a nice look back, and it is enough to make you wonder what would a contemporary Pontiac look like if GM hadn’t caved to China’s tastes in Buicks.
