Historical Race Footage: The 1988 SCCA Trans Am Race At Long Beach, California

Even with all of the hype, media coverage, random acts of absolute insanity and the wrecks, it’s becoming increasingly more and more difficult to find enthusiasm for NASCAR. The last time I got excited about a Daytona 500, Juan Pablo Montoya had snapped a truck arm on his car and smashed into a jet dryer, resulting in one of the most strange and memorable reasons for red-flagging a NASCAR race in recent history. Otherwise, unless it’s a spectacular crash or a couple of drivers beating each other’s ass on camera, there isn’t much for me in NASCAR anymore…certainly not with the racing.

With that said, I’ve been watching more and more classic Trans Am footage. There’s plenty of it on YouTube and it makes me wish that there was better TA1 and TA2 coverage now. There’s lots to like: a field of drivers that ranges from the unknown to the well-skilled, with names like Lyn St. James, Paul Newman and Hans Stuck popping up. The cars varied widely, from Audis to Porsches, Camaros, Thunderbirds, Oldsmobile Toronados, Buick Regals, Merkurs and more. Turbocharged fours, V6s and V8s, touring-car-style vehicles to tube-frame cars…you had a great mix of vehicles, not one cloned copy. This is worth my time, and should be worth yours too. If you’re stuck inside and have no desire to go shovel more snow, this is a fine way to kill about an hour.

Sorry , didn’t mean to imply the crash involving Newman and Hoerr . Croft crashed shortly after in a single car incident. (Bangshift where’s the edit funtion ? 🙂 )
