Monday Morning Madness: Sidecar Motorcross Jumps To Classic Van Halen!

Monday Morning Madness: Sidecar Motorcross Jumps To Classic Van Halen!

I have to wonder how the conversation goes when a team for sidecar motorcross gets put together. It’s one thing to ask your buddies to help you out in the pits for a weekend for the promise of pizza and beer and good times. It’s another altogether to ask someone to be the sidecar weight, you know?

“Hey, man…you still up for helping with the racing this weekend?
“Yeah, of course!”
“Cool, cool. Look, I need to ask a favor of you for this weekend. How would you like to be a part of the race, not just standing in the pits?”
“That would be sick! You putting in a second bike?”
“Nah, nothing like that. You see this?” (shows a picture of a sidecar motorcross bike)
“Dude, what is that?”
“A sidecar. You’ll be my partner in the race.”
(Looks the photo over closely) “Um…there’s no seat? No belt?”
“Nope. You just hang on to that grab handle. And you climb all over the bike to keep the weight where we need it. And you need to be ready for when we hit the jumps…”
“WAIT A MINUTE. No belt, no seat, I’ve got to climb around the whole thing like a spider monkey, and you’re gonna JUMP this thing, too?”

“Yeah, pretty much.”

“Ok, eff it, I’m in.”

I don’t get it myself, but then again I don’t have to. I’m just going to do like you are going to do: sit here, watch the action and enjoy some Van Halen.

I went to a motocross race at Saddleback Park in Southern Cal in 1972 or so. The races I remember the most were the sidecars with 750 Honda 4s and big English twins. Very impressive for a 18 yr old.
