Morning Symphony: Who Would Be The First To Hop On This V-Twin Racing Lawnmower?

I can’t lie…the lawn mower I use to hack down the grass around BangShift Mid-West is not fast. Not in the least. But that doesn’t stop me from whipping around from one edge of the property line to the other as if I was doing some sort of messed-up autocross. It’s been that way since I was a kid. Next to a go-kart track, the riding lawnmower is the most likely first shot for any up-and-coming gearhead to get behind the wheel of something and drive for a bit. Sure, it’s under the auspices of helping Dad not roast in the sun mow the lawn, but when you’re young, you don’t care…it’s you, the steering wheel, and the engine moving you along.

But your kid days have long since passed, and so has your fear for the power of a typical riding mower’s standard engine. Okay, hot-shot. We’ve got something for you. There is a dedicated group of people who race riding mowers, and they fall into two groups: those who swap to motorcycle engines, and those who build lawnmower engines that flat-out rock. Meet the latter. This is what four thousand dollars can do to a Briggs and Stratton Vanguard V-twin lawnmower engine. This is somewhere around seventy or so horsepower, and that’s the low end of what these guys can get out of them. Just listen to the way this little mother raps out when the guy hits the throttle. Would you hop on?
