Motor Trend’s Carlos Lago Skips His Usual New Car Review And Gets To Test Out…Roadkill’s AMC Gremlin

OUCH, oh, how the mighty have fallen. The last time we saw Motor Trend’s Carlos Lago he was pimping out a Mercedes-Maybach, dressed to the nines, eating Del Taco in pure luxury while hauling Freiburger around, trying to convince him of the benefits of the ultra-Merc. At some point between then and now he must’ve pissed off somebody, because for this episode of Ignition, he gets stuck with an old friend from Roadkill, “the Gremmie”. A beaten, bashed and abused 1975 model with a 232 straight six and an automatic, the Gonna-Hurl Green machine has had a pretty interesting life, serving as the tow car for the Prius that they steamrolled with a tank, then appearing in the Us vs. Them autocross challenge. This time, however, it’s not DF driving the car, but Lago: a man who is used to much more modern and powerful machines. Watching him cope with a 40-year-old AMC with…um, character?…has to be one of the most unintentionally funny things we’ve seen in quite some time. But driving the Gremmie will do him some good…it will remind him just how good we do have it with newer cars. Or it’ll just give him a rash, who knows…

I love the Gremlin. Carlos hit it on the nose here: this car with its quirks, ugly looks, wear and *ahem* gremlins, is such a perfectly honest and real.
I’d gladly trade my daily driver Corolla for a Gremmy.

Gremlins have always been cool, at least with a 360-401 swap. I hope to have one one day, but the damn hipsters keep driving up the price. My only hope is that they’ll all switch to brown, diesel, manual Volvo wagons or something.

I’ve always liked Gremlin’s, even when they were new.

The bit about the manifolds being on the same side that’s not unique to the Gremlin, that same basic engine powered a few million Jeeps and is in my 96 Cherokee. I’d love to build a Gremlin with a Jeep 4.0 and a 5 speed.
