MotorWeek Takes A Look At The 1975 Chevrolet Chevelle Laguna, The Slope-nosed Special

MotorWeek Takes A Look At The 1975 Chevrolet Chevelle Laguna, The Slope-nosed Special

145 horsepower in a car the size of a Chevrolet Chevelle Laguna is pathetic, for sure. But remember the years that the Laguna was built in: mid-1970s, the height of the luxury movement, the biggest downplay of sportiness and racing imagery, and a strange timeframe in GM history where racing wasn’t the ultimate go-to for sales. Chevy’s bread and butter for the 1970s was the Monte Carlo…the Chevelle was left to pretty much be a budget option and not much was done with it except for the Laguna nameplate. The 1973-74 versions was a slightly different take on the flat-faced nose, but for 1975-76, the slope-nose look came into form. Like any other oddball visual modification, the Laguna’s rhinoplasty job was for NASCAR homologation and nothing else.

If you have never driven a third-gen Chevelle, two things stick out: it’s a big damn car, about the same size as a 1977-96 B-body, and for such a yacht, it handles a lot better than you would ever expect it to. If the engine has made it this long in stock form, you do the car a favor, rip it out and either build it properly or replace it with an engine that packs some actual guts. And don’t mess with the interior…the Chevelle’s rotating front seats are the stuff of legends. Motorweek decided to look at a 1975 model and all we can say is take their words with a grain or two of salt, but be honest: you see potential in the Laguna, don’t you?

I had a 73 Chevelle SS back in 1981 when I was in high school. Light green with white interior and swing out buckets. 454, M40 with the 3.42 posi. I had 15×8 Auto Drags on it, satin finish with 245/60-15 BFG’s all around. Wish I would have kept it now. 1 of 2500 with the big block. I can attest to the good handling of these cars. Good shocks and rubber made a big improvement. It was a fun car.
