Movie Car Chase: The IROC Camaro vs. Monte Carlo SS Chase From The 1998 Flick “Black Dog”

Movie Car Chase: The IROC Camaro vs. Monte Carlo SS Chase From The 1998 Flick “Black Dog”

“Black Dog” isn’t a movie you watch for any sort of plot. The idea that an ex-con (played by Patrick Swayze) who somehow miraculously got his CDL license back after manslaughter charges was tricked by an arms dealer (Meat Loaf) is the kind of scenario that can only play out on a bad cable network afternoon movie. No, Black Dog is notable for it’s vehicle action sequences and something appreciable: the (at the time) use of late-model vehicles as star cars. Using the blue Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z for the good guy Sonny’s ride was a good call, as was using the certainly rebuilt, possibly re-hashed Monte Carlo SS for the shotgun-wielding henchmen. And these two prime examples of 1980s GM muscle (quit snickering) are actually used and abused. There is little info on just how many cars were used in this chase sequence, but at least two Electric Blue Camaros, one Monte Carlo and one Oldsmobile Cutlass (the explosion car) were pressed into service for this stretch. And this isn’t CGI, either…this is off-roading at it’s finest. Black Dog might have stunk as a movie, but the driving sequences made 15-year-old me think of a violent version of Smokey and the Bandit. Two years later, and I was really considering painting the Monte Carlo SS I owned to match the one you’ll see here.

As I recall he didn’t have a CDL, that’s why he was working as a mechanic. They promised they would get him his license back after making the run.
I dug the cage in the Camaro, like its just what one has in his daily driver.

As an MCSS guy the introduction scene to the monte is cringe worthy with the 2×4 block of wood being used as a battery installation tool.

    Still love the movie though.
