The Challenger Revival, Part 19: Air Conditioning And The Reconstruction Of The Dash

Dylan McCool and I have several things in common: a strong Mopar streak, a love of the open road, and we both live in a part of the United States where the summer weather can be described as, “swampy”. You know what I’m talking about: step outside at any hour of the day and you are instantly sweating, sticky, hot. It’s disgusting. I mowed my lawn yesterday and lost four pounds of water weight. I weed-eated around my house the day prior and tripled the water loss. For years, I decried air conditioning. It was an extra, unnecessary except on the hottest days of the year. Living in Colorado high desert spoiled me…it didn’t get humid until the rains moved through, and most of the time the rains cooled down the air to a pleasant level. Here in Kentucky the sun is not your friend, and neither is air so thick that you can swim through it. A/C is a must.

So for the next update on Dylan’s 1973 Dodge Charger revival project, the air conditioning system is going in. One issue, though…McCool’s E-body isn’t a factory A/C car. No matter…Vintage Air has a solution for the car that will turn the interior into a meat locker. Remove the old, chunky HVAC box, do some cleanup work, drill a couple of holes, and you’re in business. And to put the HVAC box out of sight, we have the new upper dash pad, ready to be mated to the lower dash frame that was painted then put away a while back. We fully understand the steps taken in this part of the program…now, hurry up with that Hemi already!
