Ow, My Spine: Watch These XJ Jeeps Go For Height In The Woods!

Ow, My Spine: Watch These XJ Jeeps Go For Height In The Woods!

AMC might be most fondly remembered for the AMX, but credit really needs to be given to the XJ Cherokee. Conceived as one of American Motors’ last major projects before being purchased by Chrysler in 1987, the XJ had several positive things to claim. It really kickstarted the idea of a smaller, family-friendly sport-utility vehicle and gave GM and Ford something to think about with it’s four-door design, something neither company had until the 1990s. While the GM 2.5L four did find it’s way into some Cherokees, it’s the AMC six that everyone remembers fondly, and of course, since it has the word “JEEP” on the body somewhere, it has to be tough and durable for off-road adventures that most XJs really didn’t get to see. I did say “most”…some see the great outdoors often and a few find their moment of glory out on some trail, in the woods…moments before the front axle is bent into the shape of a banana and some chiropractor gets a call for a new patient. The jumps are amazing, as you’ll see, but coming down on a fairly stock suspension design is making me look for the heat pack for myself!

I off roaded my dad’s new 87 Cherokee Laredo a few times that he did not know about. Nothing like that there but it went in the mud pretty good. Coin op car wash right after and no one knew anything.
