RCR Reviews: Lee Iacocca, From Ford To Chrysler, The Entire Story

It’s quite fitting that Lohnes would find a K-car wagon today, of all days, to feature, because The Roman, the worker bee behind Regular Car Reviews, has dropped his research work on the man who brought the 11th letter into the limelight in the early 1980s. Lee Iacocca. You know him as the savior that Chrysler desperately needed at the end of the 1970s, the man to plead Chrysler’s case to the government after Lynn Townsend and to a lesser extent, John Riccardo, had managed to nearly sink the company. You know the boxy little front-drive Mopars, the minivans, the twenty-thousand versions of the same flavor of ice cream that the K-car ended up being. But Iacocca didn’t just magick onto the scene in time to go hat-in-hand to the government…that occurred after decades at Ford, which saw spectacular highs, catastrophic lows, and working conditions with Henry Ford II that would justify an insanity defense had Lee ever snapped in the boardroom.

Iacocca’s tale from his early days in Pennsylvania to his current state as a retiree in California is an amazing one, starting from humble roots and ending up on top of the automotive world twice. Not only was his tenure at Ford successful, but his Chrysler time borders on mythological at this point. You’ll need an hour to make it through The Roman’s explanation, but between the historical photos he worked up, the details that he obviously spent tons of time researching and his straight-up, no BS delivery on the subject matter, we can say that it’s worth the time. Few people have impacted the world of automobiles quite like Iacocca, and certainly no more than a few after the horseless carriages had been introduced.
