Restrained Yet Deeply Customized, The “Volkstream” VW Bus Is Handcrafted Beauty

This is one of those SEMA vehicles from last year that caught me up for a moment…mainly because I had spent nearly most of the week walking by it not noticing it. When I walked down the aisle one way, it was a clean, restored VW bus…a nice oasis of classic lines and conservative taste compared to what is usually on the floor. Walking the other way…well, I don’t remember if I kept thinking “motorhome” or “travel trailer”, but one way or another I just didn’t take sight that they were one and the same vehicle until I stopped by and started peering into the windows for a second look.

Randy Grubb might not be a name that immediately hits you, but twenty to one you know his work. Think about Jay Leno’s “tank car”, or the “Piss’d Off Pete”, or the double-decker “Magic Bus” or maybe even the “Decoliner”. Randy is the creative genius behind all of them. He’s a master of the raw metal look but the thing is, most of his creations have been…how to say this nicely?…huge. Mainly out of necessity. His early creations from the Blastolene era used tank engines, big GMC V-12s, or other monstrous lumps that would leave Lohnes panting. By comparison, the 1959 VW van that he brought to SEMA seemed just about…rational? You decide…
