The Parting Shift: A Screaming Detroit and 13-Speeds

The Parting Shift: A Screaming Detroit and 13-Speeds

We’re going two-stroke diesel with this week’s parting shift. This video rules on a couple of levels, but the sounds of the Deeetroit Diesel screaming away is something to note as well as the whacked shift pattern on the 13-speed transmission in the 1967 Kenworth being driven! This big old rig is one that we would debate raffling off a family member to have in the driveway. Sure, the neighbors probably wouldn’t be as into the the scream of the two stroke diesel as much as we would be but, well, that’s their problem right?

This truck is so old school that it doesn’t even have power steering. By the looks of the interior it is in wonderful shape though. The sound of a Detroit Diesel, working away is really something we’d have pumped into our office if we could.Hell, this thing sounds like it’s going faster than hell and looks sorta like it’s running a roadcourse. You gotta love it.

Now thats how they did it in the REAL world, not todays steering wheel holders!! then, 13 with double o d. Today, 18 spd AUTO, W T F!! Dont give me that mileage bull.

I run only in the mountains of British Columbia doing Regional Haul now pulling Super-B Gasoline tankers. I am 140,000 lbs loaded and the company triied to give me a Volvo with i-shift auto. I drove it for one load only and told them to give it to someone else. I went back to the 04 KW 565 Cummins w/ an 18spd double over.

LOL Colin , one load with the Volvo ??? I didn`t get the Volvo they gave me out of the yard !!!!! I bullshit you not !!! Give me a Roadranger any day ….

I’m with you! IMO the Volvo for what I do is just plain dangerous! The first real hill I hit it won’t downshift fast enough on it’s own and manually clicking the FREAKING BUTTON is still sluggish at best, no clutch pedal at all so no way of truly being manual no matter what they say. With the 18 a quick shot of fuel and downshift when I want and hold that gear, If I’m asleep at the wheel and head into a downgrade to hot with the manual I can take it a full gear at a time down if needed. It will always hold that gear not try and optimize fuel usage and rpm and constantly try to upshift on descent.

I always liked working on the screamin demons, loved the sound as well, the 318s were ok but the 350 with turo & blower were extra nice, mostly in the sound department I love an engine that whsitle’s while it works. quick reving made bangin gears a breeze.

73 KW 8V71 350 hp Detroit 5 speed main transmission 4 speed Aux trans. At the end of a day it took 40 minutes to stop vibrating . Drove it for years . Biggest reason I say HUH?? a lot

He didn’t wait for full air pressure before he took off. You could see the “Low Air” wigwag hanging down from above the windshield.

It is a Detroit so after that run it needed a gallon of oil!! And float shifting is how I was taught all you need a clutch for is stopping and starting. Really miss driving big rig tow!!
