Watch The Infamous “Dirty Bird” Pontiac Firebird Lay Down More Than 1,200hp At The Tires On The Chassis Dyno

Watch The Infamous “Dirty Bird” Pontiac Firebird Lay Down More Than 1,200hp At The Tires On The Chassis Dyno

One of our favorite cars of all time is the formerly Eric Yost owned “Dirty Bird” Pontiac Firebird. This thing has kicked ass on Drag Week multiple times, owned the Hot Rod Top Speed Challenge multiple times, and been the subject of some awesome roadside stories. While Eric doesn’t own the title of the car any more, he has still been driving it some and we believe he was involved in this tuning session with the guys at JHR Performance. The car has been cleaned way up and it seems that most of the taped on stuff, battle scars, and other warts acquired from making 7-second drag strip passes and 240mph + top speed blasts have been buffed right out.

The engine in this car is a twin turbocharged small block that has old “Pontiac” NASCAR heads on it. We’re not talking SB2 style stuff, older than that. Obviously the parts and pieces work damned good because despite running a small block, the car makes incredible power. Think about it. The 1,223hp we see unloaded on the dyno here is closer to 1,500 at the crank. That’s freaking nuts. Also consider that this car dragged  the coolest Drag Week trailer in the history of the event for a few years packed full of tools, stuff, a keg of beer, and a chilled, delicious, magical at the end of the day, keg of beer. Did we mention the beer? Sorry.

As many times as we have heard this car rip roaring down tracks at full song, it seems all that much more pissed off when doing the same thing strapped in place. Crank your speakers and listen to the fury as the (not so) Dirty Bird hammers the dyno for more than 1,200hp.
