(Words and photos by Doug Gregory) – So what we have here are the Straight-Axle Mafia and some other classic-style racers that came to play old-time drags. The racing was 1/8th mile and was great for photogs like us. The falcon wagon and the ‘Tin Man’ ’64 Chevy II I think were near equal in the department of burnout awesomeness as they boiled the hides virtually every time for super style points. The ‘Tin Man’ also may have got the highest wheelie of any nostalgia car running, but didn’t get so carried away as to cause concern for carnage. Most of the cars are manual so clutch drops at high-rpm for dry hops and launches are the norm.

Adding to the thrills was a rear-engined funny car we’re told is one of two currently certified to race in the US. It’s got a N/A BBC from Ohio Crankshaft and we saw it lay down a 5.3x ET on one pass. It’s a late 70s Vette body draped over a 1971 chassis. The owner hasn’t weighed it yet, but estimates it coming in under 1900lbs. Just seeing it pull to the line with the driver’s head where you’d normally expect to see the engine is pretty wild. Enjoy these shots from one of the oldest tracks in the country spotlighting some nostalgia racing.
