(Photos by Joe Grippo) – Lest you think that Grippo is only capable of aiming his photo equipment at Fords, he took the time to cruise the rest of the pits at Watkins Glen International and oogled the rest of the cars that were running with the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA). We’ve been running a ton of nostalgia drag racing stuff here in the last few days, but there is another really neat nostalgia racing scene out there and that’s the vintage sports car stuff that Grippo documented in this gallery.<\/p>\n
While there are lots of old school foreign stuff, you’ll see plenty of neat iron like stock cars from yesteryear, neat vintage V8 open wheel cars, IMSA machines (like the Monza below) from the 1970s and 1980s, and on and on. One of the main differences between these cars and the drag cars we love so much is that while the drag cars are largely unable to run in anger because their chassis certs and specs do not meet modern standards, these road race cars can still be hammered on…hard! True, the racing doesn’t have the intensity of Daytona, LeMans, or Sebring, but watching a Formula 5000 car pull through the gears and hump down a long straight is like mechanical time travel.<\/p>\n
