Everywhere we look there are cool things to see here at Bonneville Speed Week, and Cole Reynolds and I have been running around shooting photos like mad men so we can share all the cool stuff with you. Sunday had perfect weather, and all systems were a go when Danny Thompson, George Poteet, and others pulled to the starting line for their record return runs. Danny had run 435 mph on Saturday which meant Sunday morning’s Record Return run had to be at least 379 mph or so in order to beat his previous record of 406 mph. Poteet on the other hand had run 418 mph on Saturday and had experienced a few minor issues so they were confident they could run at least that, if not much more, to set their record.

Well, things didn’t go quite as planned, with Danny Thompson running first and leaving the course around the 2 mile mark with engine trouble. Unfortunately that means no record for Thompson. We were later told a connecting rod had broken. We were incredibly surprised to find out that they were not going to repair it and make more runs, as they loaded up and headed for home mid day.

Poteet on the other hand was thrilled to death as he ran nearly 440 mph and handily set his record with a mile average speed of over 428 mph. Unfortunately for the Thompson team, Poteet’s 439 mile per hour exit speed gave him the top speed of the meet so far in their pursuit of yet another Top Speed of the Meet Hot Rod Trophy.

But Bonneville Speed Week is about more than the streamliners, and we’ve got tons of photos of all kinds of them running and having a great time, like our pal Lee Sicilio who’s Hemi Dodge Daytona can be seen above. Check them all out below and don’t forget you can click on any photo and they will open much larger on your screen and you can then scroll through them with the left and right arrows.
