(Words and photos by Doug Gregory) – So, how are you all liking our coverage…? Told you I wasn’t going to recap the racing because the Official SEGA photographers already took care of that. C/Gas is last year’s D/Gas with the highest weight per cubic inch, but don’t think that means they are slow or can’t put on a show.

A few stories here. One is John Gilligan hurt his bigger and more powerful motor so he stuck the one from last year back in his Penny Pincher ’57 (the ruddy primer car) and never looked back. On paper it appeared his chances of advancing were slim since pretty much everyone had stepped up their game in 2018. Well he beat on that old engine like it was a dead horse he’d brought back to life and got it to run a new best plus advance past the first round. Here’s to driving your own stuff like a rental.

Another story we heard about is how Jimmy Huff spun the Clevor in the Hoopty Wagon to 12k on Saturday during a break in the weather. How’d they know he hit 12k…? That’s where the rev-limiter kicks in. Talk about having faith in your own work. Jimmy builds a mean bullet.

The BIG story in C/Gas is Larry and Sandy Noel’s long road to an emotional winner’s circle appearance. The best part of racing this stuff is more about being there, the people, and having a good time, but people still would like a win now and then to sweeten the experience. The Noel’s are a great pair and the last photo in this collection will tell you just a part of why. That’s Larry (white pants and blue shirt) sweeping the water out of a low spot on pit road. No job too small or too big. Later in eliminations I was walking by their pit and Sandy was standing between the tilt front end and the radiator holding an electric fan to cool the car down before the next round. Teamwork makes the dream work. This is what I like to see when I am at any track and these two are a class act. Congratulations for a well-deserved and hard-earned victory. This win also put team Crazy Horse into a comfortable lead in the points.

The photos are pretty much in chronological order so you can follow along as the racing progressed.

One more article to go. Come back and check it out.
