The 2018 Danchuk Tri-Five Nationals lived up to the expectations, populations, and car counts that have been a hallmark of the show ever since it first came to Beech Bend a few years ago. For days, it seemed that half of the driving population had traveled back in time to 1957 and that everybody bought GM products. Bel Airs, 150s, 210s, wagons, trucks, all on parade throughout Bowling Green…it is happiness to a gearhead’s eyes to see such awesome old iron cruising among the crossovers of modern traffic. From pedestrian stock colors to the wild customs and menacing primer looks, perfectly restored cars and machines that have been hell-bent on ripping the competition in half longer than any of your loyal writing staff has been alive, the Tri-Five Nats brings history to life in sound, sight, and if you’re lucky, smell in the form of high-test gas (bonus if it’s honest-to-God racing fuel!)<\/p>\n
The fact that even after sixty years, these cars still have a dedicated and unbelievably loyal fanbase says volumes. Very few vehicles have ever gained the kind of status that the Chevrolet car line did in the 1950s. The Ford Mustang might be the only other one that comes close, and it’s for the same reason: it was the right car at the right time, with looks that were both hip yet timeless, accessible to customization but perfectly fine as they were. This is the car of the 1950s, the purest expression of what was going on, the best of what Detroit had to offer as a whole. It’s not an overdone Eldorado, not as problematic as some of the Chrysler products were, and it certainly has nothing in common with a VW Type 1 of the era. Decades on now, and the tri-five Chevrolets are still one of the best things going in the world of cars.<\/p>\n
