(Peter Liebig Photography) – The recent California Hot Rod Reunion attracts a broad collection of hot rods and racecars, with one class of classic cars that always attracts a unique bunch. A/FX has a cool group of cars, some with altered wheelbase modifications and some that’d truly fall into traditional Super Stock classes.

A/FX is a personal favorite competition class, running nine and ten second Elapsed Times, compared to the fuel cars, A/FX is one of the slowest groups, but are some classic hot rods many spectators grew up with, the kind one could gleefully buy off from a neighborhood showroom floor.

Number one qualifier was Brandon Clark in Jim Clark’s “Hemi Express” ’71 Dodge Demon running 8.958 at 150.95 mph.

""

The class winner was San Diego’s Jack Goodich, who wheeled his awesome full-sized, altered wheelbase, injected Hemi-powered “Outer Limits” ‘64 Plymouth Belvedere through five rounds of eliminations. Goodich, who has been racing his Mopar for a bunch of years, took home the event winners trophy.

""

Ken Moreland in his “West Coast Hooker” 468 cubic inch, ’66 Chevelle fouled out in the final – handing the win to Goodich who ran a solid 9.977 ET at 133.61 miles per hour.

""

It’s always great to see epic straight-axle cars in this class like Rich Wood’s black ’62 Chevy II from San Diego, who qualified fourth with a 9.416 at 135.14 MPH.

""

Even big bodied cars like Paul Soliz’ ’61 Pontiac Ventura, sporting a 468 cubic inch big block Chevy made the field with a 10.479 at 128.46 MPH.
