  • My 1969 Chevelle A Story

Hello all, I bought this Chevelle back in 2006 for my grandfather and I to work on as a father/son project. It started life (as far as I know) as a 1969 Chevelle Malibu 350 300HP car, all drums, power brakes, power steering, no a/c, and a Powerglide with a 2.72 open rear end to back it up. It spent its entire life in California until a teenager bought the car, took the original guts out and dropped in a crate 350 and drove it here to Texas, with 30 year old shocks, bushings, springs, even holes in the upper A arms. The kid did as much as you would expect from a non car guy, he dropped a stereo system in it (until it was stolen) and put on the cheapest brightest wheels he could find (cragars). He took it to put a Macco paint job on it (half decent) but didnt take off the original paint first (bright sky blue). I took it off of him at the age of 21 with plans of glory!

Now first thing I did was replace the suspension with global west tubular A arms, adjustable upper rear control arms and lowers from Spohn, I installed big block springs in the front even though it was still a small block because I knew at sometime in the future I would hopefully (it was my dream) to have a big block installed. Now at this time I must admit I was young and I wanted to turn it into a street burning, drag strip launching wheelie ass kicking monster. I installed a 2 1/2 cowl induction hood because I wanted something functional but I didnt like the tacky huge cowls (later that hood became a very good thing).

Well after about 6 months I stopped by a friends garage and laying their in the corner was a 100 percent complete engine. It was big, very big and at the time only knowing minimal about cars and engines I could only hope it was a bigblock. I asked and it was a 1973 unmolested 454, I asked how much and he said 300, 30 seconds later I was the owner of a big block. However when I was about to leave he asked me what I was going to do with that 350 once that 454 had taken its place (he already knew what I was thinking in my bright and shiny eyes). Of course I hadnt thought about it so I said I had no idea. He said he would give me the 454 for the 350, straight up with the TH350 in the corner. 30 seconds later Im looking for a jack to get that trans, bigblock in the back of my truck! My grandfather was a little surprised and shocked by the time he got home from work and was trying to slow me down because I was as excited as a jack rabbit with 30 female rabbits at my disposal. He knew it would costs a good bit of money and take time, something he just really didnt want to deal with at the moment but he knew a good deal when he saw one and he couldnt say no to his grandson. Within a week I was picking out parts and pieces for this new 454 and I was going through those parts catalogs like I did with those playboy magazines when I was 11 except it lasted longer then 45 seconds.

I knew I wanted to up the compression because I knew 73-74 was the beginning of the lower compression engines etc. So forged pistons with 9.5:1 compression sounded about right! I always loved the name "Hooker Headers" and if its more expensive then others then it has to be good right? So long tube Hooker Headers it was. MSD Ignition had always seemed the best looking and again it was more expensive then Mallory so that has to be the best right? Hey look theyre on sale! Ordered. Chrome had never been my thing (I like nickle platting and billet) so those nice looking polished aluminum valve covers are looking better then my grandmothers fine China! Ordered. Now even at that time I had even heard of the Holley vs Eddy battles and I wanted a kick ass dragster (young and innocent keep in mind guys lol) so Holley 750 it was. Hey Voodoo sounds like a badass name for a camshaft Ill get that one! Bigger is better so gimmie that .520 lift something cam, whatever that means! I have to have electric fans I dont want this thing to get hot! (I was right about that one) Eventually the list looked like this. (For you ADD guys)

    Forged Pistons
    Hooker Headers
    MSD
    VooDoo Cam
    Bored .030 over
    Rebuilt TH350
    4 Core Radiator
    Dual electric Fans

My engine builder convinced me to port and polish my 781 Oval Port heads (which was a good thing) but of course I had no idea what that was all I heard was "more horsepower".

In the end it turned out to be a beautiful thing.

Now this was fine for awhile but that pesky lack of knowledge caught up with me and boom my flat tappet goes flat. This time I had learned more, it had been a year or so. I had gone to a tech school for automotive, graduated, working for Ford as a tech (dont get me started). This time I was ready to do a few more things.

I decided to bite the bullet and spend the money and buy a pare of 310cc Dart Pro 1's, along with a larger much more safer hydraulic roller camshaft from compcams with .612/.612 Lift 314 dur. 110LSA, 1.7 Pro Mag Roller rockers. And finally a Dart High Rise Single Plane intake.

The power was absolutely awesome however I had a problem that pesky 750 wasnt holding up. It was backfiring so much out the carb I was going deaf and people were ducking on a regular bases for fear of being shot in a drive by shooting. So after much searching and talking to people in the know I went with ProSystems. I called them up, told them everything about my car and engine and they told me what I needed and even before I told them they told me my current carb was probably acting up. You got that right, so a few weeks later in comes this beautiful thing.

I slapped this baby on, but at the same time I installed an Eaton Posi and 3.73 rear end and wow......I went through several conversations with my grandfather that went like this. "You are ordering more new tires?! You have a new pair on right now." I reply "Yea I dont know I guess you shouldnt buy Firestone, bad quality I guess". Of course he didnt by it but he didnt let on.

Now by this time I had grown up more so or let me say I matured. I got to the point where I didnt want to show off, I didnt want a Tasmanian devil, I wanted a nice old school classic. Ive become more of a restore it dont destroy it kinda guy but I wasnt about to undo everything I did so I went about making it look more the part.

I had to get those fugly 45 dollar trailer wheel cragars off of my Chevelle. And with my "matured" view I knew I could go with only 2 choice. The original SS wheels or the old school American Racing vintage Torque Thrusts. I wanted the one less people went with so that mean SS it was. A call to Wheel Vintques solved that problem real fast with 15x7 up front and 15x8 in the rear. I am not one of the new generation big wheel guys. I guess being raised by my grandparents rubbed off on me.

Now eventually with those wheels I had to start replacing other things because you just cant stop with 1 SS badge! (yes I know with 4 wheels their are 4). So I took this time to order new chrome bumpers a new grille and SS badge!

That SS badge looked good for the first week until someone stole it but hey I still have a new grille and bumpers!

Well with that completed I needed a new exhaust. I had been running dumps since I had installed the 454, 5 years previous, and that loud obnoxious noise just wasnt who I was any more. I decided to go with Magnaflow 3" Xpipe exhaust all the way out the back to SS tips, told ya I was/am really getting into that classic/restore/stock look!

OMG 1200 bucks! But its so good looking! And accourding to my grandfather "For that price it had better sound better then your truck". Reply "Ugh Pops it will, its good looking!". Response "O_o".

Well It sounded pretty damned good if you ask me

            After - http://youtu.be/WiH2IpX5UYc

            Yup, Pops loved it.

So this is how my car is as of a few days ago and its been a long road. But it has been a great one and there are still so much more to do. I want to paint it, either black with the original style 69 SS red side stripes, red with black SS side stripes, or silver with black SS side stripes. Whatever I go with be assured it will be a color that has come from the factory and it wont have what every Chevy has, the 70 style SS stripes because come on guys......really..........really? Your SUV, truck, Camaro, Chevelle, and Chevette dont need matching stripes! Its been done! ;) Interior will also come, most likely black SS buckets with a horseshoe shifter and maybe lower it down an inch. But thanks for looking guys, ill post more as more develops!

PS that duck pond in those pics was wafting what smelt like the worlds largest diarrhea intake plant.

Congradulations, you have a great story with a beautiful car.My dad had a 69 when I was a kid. I think that has to be the best looking chevelles of all time.
Coming at you live from the birthplace of GM,Flint,Mi. Where your car is worth more than the property it's parked on.

                        I'd need a Chevelle first.
