  • Exploded view of 60-66 Chevy truck steering column?

Anyone have one that they can scan?

Goliath's steering wheel kinda "floats" inside the confines of the column. I am pretty sure the column was torn apart before because of the fact that the directional arm has been replaces with a Signal-Stat universal unit, and it just looks like someone butched the thing somewhere along the line.

I've never had one of these apart but it seems to me that there is a bushing or collar missing that would keep the wheel from "floating" and fix the shaft inside the column. Since the glaciers are closing in on us here for the next week or so, I was going to pull the steering column out and rebuild it in the basement. In doing some research, companies sell upper and lower mast jacket bearing kits....taking a shot in the dark, I think I am missing the upper.

The shaft is secured at the rag joint, so it is not like the thing is going to fall out, but it is not right as it is.

    Ideas?

you want 64-66 info....they used a different column in 60-62, changed in 63, then changed again in 64. But GMC used the 63 chevy column from 63-66, just to make it interesting.

The shaft might be worn where the bearing is gone.....

Also you don't really need an exploded view, once you get the wheel off and then pull the "mast jacket" off the shaft, it will all explode nicely. Take pictures as you go.

(but I'll see if I have the drawing anyways)

is your shaft 2 piece or one.
is the colum colapse type for safety or the old one piece chest crusher

back then they were a single long shaft. It's pretty easy to adapt an early 70s tilt column, with a separate collapsible lower shaft, to these trucks.

I'm thinking that top bearing is AWOL in Goliath by the way the shaft can move freely inside the column.

the fun thing is that the races are hardened, the shaft is not, so when the bearings fall apart it cuts thru the shaft like butter.

                        Oh sweet frozen irony.

So I went out in the dark and frozen evening (a few below zero) to pull the steering column apart. I unbolted the mounting collar from under the dash, pulled the steering wheel, loosened the mast jacket, starter to slide it off the shaft and...smack. The mast jacket runs into the rear window or ceiling before it is clear of the steering shaft....and it is by a long shot. I guess I am going to have to pull it apart at the rag joint and lower the shaft out from the bottom.

                        Am I missing something?

probably not. It was real easy to pull the column out on my 66 suburban

Reading the shop manuals, it seems like they want me to pull the steering box off. Ungh.

should not have to. just disconnect the rag joint, and wrestle the column out.
