my DD mazda protege's cruise control is not working. The "cruise" light comes on when you hit the set button but when I let off the gas it just slows down. The light goes off when the brakes are pressed or the cancel button is hit. I checked the wires and the vacuum lines and did not see anything that stuck out. Any ideas?

Russell, there are a lot of pages on that in the mazda forums... just reading through them, my question would be "does the horn work" ?
The others imply loose wire front left somewhere. One guy had behavior like yours kinda and had a bulb out (! ticket saver).Flying south, with a flock of bird dogs.
