    Worthless Engine Discussion

Someone I know is looking at putting a mod motor into an old Ford truck. He mentions that he knows where he can get a non PI SOHC 4.6L for around $500 that is in a car he has access to in order to remove any wiring he needs. Two points on that:
    1. You can get an entire Mark VIII for under $1000
    2. I sold a non PI 4.6L for $250 over 10 years ago.

This brought me to the revelation that a non PI 4.6L should actually be free at this point. If someone has one, it is because they are too lazy to take it to the scrap yard, so you are actually doing them a favor by taking it out of their garage.

Similar to a 305. Once upon a time a couple friends and myself went to look at some SBC blocks. I believe they were supposed to be a 2 bolt 400, and a 4 bolt 350, and maybe there was a third. I don't remember all the details. In any case, one of the blocks turned out to be a 305 block, an offer was made on the worthwhile blocks and the guy agreed to the offer under the condition that we took the 305 block too. The 305 being another worthless engine.

Then there would be the two year Mustang 4.2L V8 engine. I've never even seen one of those things. RARE! Or the most worthless engine ever built.

What other engines are so inherently crap that they have actually become worthless? Only worth taking off someone's hands for free because the scrap yard is on your way home.

Debate welcome that any of the engines called out above actually hold some sort of value greater than scrap.

I have one of those. Makes a good weight for my Dad's disk plow.

I've been given several chevy Stovebolt sixes, and I ended up scrapping them all. They do weigh a lot.

I have a nice standard bore 396 2 bolt block I've been hanging on to for 34 years, one of these days I'll let it go....but no one has ever asked to buy it from me.

another wild man with his definition of "junk"

the 5.7 is the one given away for free, there is at least 15 years of nothing but junk. The block castings were terrible for along time..could even break a crank like an EJ Subaru.. candy canes.

the 305 became an option with small heads. Of course, I come from a generation that actually racked up the odometers twice over to get to work in the rally roads of my locale, so opinions would be different.

the first sign of gm being manly again was the 305HO, and too rare to mention, even gurus could not tell the difference if it was sitting on the ground with heads on....and that is the first to go 3 times over on one build, tall trannies working their way into cars and trucks.

they should all be very cheap or free, prior to the LS series in the late 90s. The most errored dramatic time in history.

I have busted everything.. just treating them nice.

the fords and non-Siamese. those will never be free, nor will they be 400mph 2 second dragsters. I can live with that.

decipher the junk closely, don't just chuck stuff around, like bad facts.

A non PI 4.6L, meaning pre 99 old heads that flowed way worse for the guys that aren't at all into new stuff, will run for hundreds of thousands of miles. That doesn't mean they aren't worthless. The PI version has more power, gets better fuel mileage, will still run forever, and can still be picked up for under $500. Plus it literally bolts in place of the non PI motor. The non PI motors are worthless.

Just like a 305, will it run forever? I don't doubt that it will. Should you pay someone money for one to bolt into your car? HELL NO, not when you can get a 350 that will bolt into the same place, make more power, and run equally forever.

A friend on another forum also suggested the GM 3.5L.

The poor Ford Cologne motors, why couldn't Ford just let them die? Did a 1960's German V6 really need carrier through 2010 in a bastardized SOHC form at nearly double the original architecture's dispacement?

IDK, hands down one of the best engines I ever owned was an '86 2.9L V6 in a Ranger. It ran very good when coupled with 3.73 gears. I had lots of fun with that truck and motor. I actually kind of miss it.

360 FE Fords got a bad name for smog powerlessness - but a boring bar goes a long way on one of those as well.

I suppose all the orphaned engines can have a purpose if there's nothing else around - or "because I can" is the primary motivator.
