If you dont mind sharing the info, who made your valve cover? Any pics?

Has anyone ever measured one of the cast aluminum marine valve covers? I think they was made by Mercury Marine? Always wondered if they were any taller.

Howdy folks, here is the website(Warning:--the Guy'z who run the 'site are currently in the middle of rehashing it,so,no 'Cover Pics.....):--www.sissellsautomotive.com <----,there ya go ;). The actual 'Lump-Port' 'Head is nothing more than a reworked stock piece, with the 'Head Bolt passages removed, and the Chamber floor raised up w/Epoxy. The best bet is to hunt down the June-2005 issue of Hot-Rod for the whole story ;D. The "Fabbed" Rocker-covers are shown in the lead Photo. Sorry,I'm not all that good at the Computer thing yet :. Sorry. ~OO6.

Re: New on board, my 67 Chevelle 300

I have a PES (Precision Engine Service) lump port on my 250. Don't know how it runs yet, but hope to soon. I also scored the PES intake, which is made from unobtanium. He just had a few cast, and I was lucky to find one. Looks like 1/2 of a V12 tunnel ram - there must be a hole cut in the hood to make it work (something left to do before our first race April 5th.). The PES lumps are a bolt-in piece of aluminum, and are kinda cool. T6 Racing in Florida also makes the lumps, modeled on the PES lumps, if anyone wants 'em. That motor Grubby described is worth a potful - one of us inliners should grab that thing.

On the valve cover - I have a Clifford. When Clyde Norwood of PES built the engine many years ago (it was originally in a Modified) he ground the first and last roller rocker for clearance. He also told me that the Clifford covers are notorious for being warped and the best way to seal them is to run 3 gaskets stacked up, which I am trying. I used 1/4" x 1 1/2" studs to retain the cover and gaskets, and I'm cutting spacers from 3/8" brake line so the 1/4" nuts will clear the cover (you kinda have to see it to understand). Anyhow, it seems to work. I'm wondering if the fab'd cover is one of the old PES covers - I've heard of them but never seen one.

Damn, this inline stuff is COOL!!!

Yes,this Inline stuff is indeed WACKY ;D,I LOVE it...alway's have alway's will. That's just the way it is with me,I'm no 'Pro' by no means, but I have FUN with what I've got laying around :D :D. In all,I've got 18 COMPLETE(Un-Stripped...)Chevy 6's,11 Mope Slant 6's,6 AMC 6's,14 Ford 6's,3 Datsun 6's,3 Toyota 6's,as well as about a dozen various Four-Cylinders(Vega/Cosworth-Vega/Toyota "20-22'R's",Dodge Omni 2.2's,ect.....a LOT OF SHIT ;D ;D!)sitting here. I've got 4 of those CLIFFORD 'Covers....they're 'quite' heavy compared to a stock stamped Sheetmetal GM/Whatever piece. The Lump-Port 'Head I mentioned is going on a '77(cast 5-76)250 which came from a Silver '77 Impala Sedan. It had a TH-350,and it also had the awful 1-piece 'Integral' 'Head which I stripped(Rockers & Pushrods/Waterneck)'an junked. When complete,I'll sling it in my '71 Nova(Manual Steering/Brakes/Radio-Delete.....I bought it as a shell about 8 years ago). I also have various 'Speed' stuff for these Engines, although not much would be considered 'Hard-Core :P :.' Oh,well. ~OO6.

Sure. But like I said, they're quite HEAVY(it's kinda like holding a loaf of Bread ;D),none of my Covers have any attaching Bolts. I also have a factory Chrome 'Cheverolet'(like your Orange stock piece)Cover, but, those are next to impossiable to find,so,I'll be holding on to it for a bit longer. Let me dig them out tommorow,Pete. ~OO6.

Started tearing into the 250 last weekend. Small potatoes to you guys, but new ground for me. Lots of fun. Please give feedback where you see fit, I'm just charging into this with little real planning.

Started by making these pins for removing the tranny:

                      Pretty nasty looking inside:

This was weird. Anybody know what's going on here with the flywheel teeth?

So if the flywheel's toast, and I have to get a new one, does that mean all the internals have to come out to get balanced with the new flywheel? The 250 is internally balanced. You can see holes drilled in the backside of the flywheel here.

                      Up on the stand:

A dolly I threw together. The tranny is still tied to my floor jack. Once I can get back out into the garage I'll put it on here. It's based on plans I found here.

Hope to get back out there this weekend to start tearing off the accessories.

Have you ever hit the starter in a car, only to hear it "zing"? What you have is evendence that someone has heard that sound with your flywheel.

You don't need a new flywheel just because the teeth of the ring gear are worn. Replacement gears are available at a good parts store. Heat the ring gear up with a torch and knock it off with a hammer and chisel. To get the new one on, again, heat it up with a torch (or a heat gun + patience), then tap it on making sure it's seated all the way around. When it cools, it will shrink and fit nice and tight. Then take the flywheel to a shop that has a flywheel resurfacing machine to make it flat and true.

Be sure to put a new starter on too, to make sure you don't eat the new ring gear.

awsome car, i have a friend with a 66 300 delux, i think thats what its called. hes got a 327 and i think a super t10 in it. im not a real big chevy fan but i love that car. id say skip the 4 brl and go for a multi carb setup, would look much better and work real good. im sure you can still get a new offenhueser manifold for that engine, its real popular. probably get the finned side and valve cover by them too. i also think id ditch the 3 spd for a t5, get some o.d. in the sucker for the highway cruising. try dan exeter auto supply for the offy stuff, not everyone carries it.

Thanks for the compliments. I have thought about a 4 or 5 speed, but don't want to cut the floor right now. Although I love the look of a bench seat and big long floor shifter.

Thanks for the heads up on the Exeter auto supply. I didn't know about that place.
