90% of carburetor problems are caused by the ignition system.

        Re: EFI Projects

You think it's just gotta be something wrong with the carb, but nine times out of ten it's a bad condensor, points misadjusted, carbon track on the dist cap, coil lost oil and is shorting when you go around a curve, timing screwed up, loose wire on the coil, the ignition switch is getting loose, etc.

ok so let me get your input on this one

when i start it the idle is smooth then it gets choppy then smooth then choppy over and over. it has good spark (new plugs wires cap rotor coil) ballast resistor appears to be fine, i even swapped it with the one off of my duster (when i had it) to confirm.

no vaccum leaks, i pulled the vaccum line off the distributor but no change ran the same (this is why i am leaning towards the distributor) a new one is running 376.00 (i just dont have the cash for this right now)

with EFI we remove the ballast resistor because it is not needed.

              Re: EFI Projects

What distributor does it have now? points, or electronic, and what type if electronic?

Usually you can get a rebuilt points distributor pretty reasonable (under $50)...rebuilt stock electronic ones from the 70s aren't too bad either.

Of course it's like anything else, it's best to do some troubleshooting first, and having the proper diagnostic equipment is a big help. If it has points, watch the dwell as the engine idles, does it vary? If you have access to an exhaust analyzer (two gas will do), see what the CO and HC numbers do, if CO is less than 1% it might be running lean, if it's over 3% or so it might be too rich. Low CO and high HC usually means it's running lean, high CO and high HC means rich, proper CO and high HC means ignition problems, or possibly compression/valve/cam issues.

              Is the choke working right?

                Re: EFI Projects

i have not really looked inside of the distributor to be honest i have not doen anything with the car in a while. it looks to be the stock unilite. i recieved this car from dynoroom as a FREEBIE and i cant complain the damn thing is awesome.

i dont use that type of diag equipment as i do EFI swaps and i use WIDEBANDS in the cars. usually i would have already put EFI on the car but would like to run it as is because it appears to be original. i dont hack cars unless it has already been done.

the choke appears to be working. its just the stove type (well you know that already).

                  Re: EFI Projects

"stock unilite"? Stock would be a points distributor. Points need maintenance and adjustment, if they're in bad shape then it could be causing the problem. If it's a Mallory Unilite, then it could have all kinds of other problems!

Good for you! Things have been different around here...but it's been a while since I've encountered any, maybe they've fixed their problems.

Pertronix 1361A. That's the base Ignitor which should be plenty for that thing, and you can install it in less than 15 minutes, while drinking a beer.

If you're not gonna put a lot of miles on the car every year (like 5k or less) then you can do just fine with points, you won't need to touch them for a couple years at a time. We have two 6 cyl rides that get maybe 5k miles at most a year, they run fine, they don't need to be messed with hardly ever.
