Has anyone ever drilled out a set of rims to go from a 1/2" to 5/8" lug stud? I don't see it as a problem as long as there is room for the sleeve that most 5/8" lugs use under them, but does anyone have any experience with this.

The reason I ask- I have dedicated street rims and dedicated race rims. If I change stud size, I don't want to have to go buy another set of street rims (they are steel, BTW).
Why think when you can be doing something fruitful?

When you say "sleeves under them" are you talking drive studs with their 5/8's thread and 11/16" smooth shank or something else? The drive studs have large diameter aluminum washers under wide flange nuts which require a corresponding flat surface lick a typical mag lug aluminum wheel. My dedicated street wheels have 45* seats and I'll run 5/8's Circle track nuts on those with the drilled out 11/16's shank size. Not ideal but the center hub is quite thick.

Steel may well be tough as Jeff says without some kin of specially designed spacer that allows for the taper seat engagement.

I have done this for years on my Magninum 500's on the Cuda. I drilled the wheel out to 11/16" then countered bored a long spacer to match the cone on the wheel. I ended up with about 1/8 inch flat on the end of the spacer that buts up to the small flat spot on the wheel, so far I havent hade any problens.

By sleeves, I meant the aluminum washers. I have seen some pretty large stackups of those.

Both ideas presented are good ideas- I will have to look at the rims this weekend and see if I can make either work. Thanks!

BTW- this thread and resulting research is costing me $$- I am going to upgrade axles, spool, and lug size in my 12 bolt... but at least with these ideas, I may only have to buy one set of wheels!

I'm in the same boat, but better safe than sorry on this stuff.

Thanks Mike for the tip on your set-up with the Magnums.

You are right on that- shearing the lugs on a wheel would suck bad enough 10 miles away from home at the local track- it would suck even worse 1500 miles from home and 500 miles from my trailer!

What spline size are you running? I have a 31 spline tru trac I use for the road course set-up but until very recent;y there wasn't a 35 spline Tru-trac for the 9". Strange has just released one and I'm thinking it along with theri new heavier duty aluminum case. They talked me into the Pro-iron case over the other aluminum cases thay have due to the street miles and other stuff I do with the car.
