Old Man Lear was one awesome possum. My dad was an A&P mechanic in Customer Service when Lear started production here in Wichita (badge number 042). Bill had an early electric scooter powered by a car battery mounted on a piece of plywood to zoom from office to plant to shop. He had a penchant for firing engineers and mechanics on Friday and hiring them back on Monday, wanted busty secretaries in the office to keep sex appeal high to Hollywood types buying his plane, and often got drunk and went on joyrides in customer planes - going straight up for miles, and then buzzing the airport tower. The FAA never pulled his license. To say he was a maverick genius is to understate the obvious. Bill Lear was a fricking legend.
