This makes total sense to me.

If they had used the 6.2 or some other LS derivative, the ricer-cry-babies wouldn't have shut up about the "displacement advantage".(.. sort of like I do when people mistakenly think Ducatis belong on a race track next to real bikes.)

It's still academic because the GTR probably doesn't get a full "racecar" treatment and will still be retarded fast... just with air conditioning and no roll-bar and DOT rubber... something the Camaro will probably give up to reach it's goal.
